Well, I’ll tell you. Since the early days when you had to pay a fee, that’s how we did it before the government put a price on it.
Then people just started paying a little more because the price went down and it became a more interesting thing that people could enjoy. The thing that’s really important to me is that the people who do this have an expectation that their work won’t go to waste and that they will enjoy it. When you do these shows and you start asking those people about their history, there’s a sense on the show that you’re bringing something to a museum where they used to look at things on the wall, and then they started looking at them in a different way. It’s all about bringing people in and saying you can now do this, let’s move it forward. There’s other stuff that goes on that’s not done. If you’re going to be working on something, it only makes sense to bring people in and let them experience it.
When you think of what you want to see, what would that be? Maybe you’d be interested in what’s in the old bookcases. They’re all covered with a lot of little books. You can hear music and you can see the people you’re working with. It’s probably a little more intimate than watching things as they were on the wall.
Or what about something like a museum with a lot of books? Maybe you can see the whole collection in one room. That could be something that’s really interesting to you, especially if you live in a city.
So with that, I’ll give you a couple of photos from one of our last shows here where we’re talking about the idea of a museum with just books. They are a lot of fun to be around and you can’t get much better than that.
Now let’s turn to the new museum, which is a great opportunity to see this as it’s always been: in the museum, surrounded by the collection, not on the same floor as the other displays. We started the season a little light, which is why it was a little bit more formal.
For the second half of the show, we turned it up to eleven, which we hadn’t done in a long time. We’ve done more of the show with music because it’s more engaging. It’s kind of easier to put out a show when you’re surrounded by a bunch of books, because you’re not worried about putting all those books
