Danae: (laughing) No, it’s not how you can do belly dancing, it’s how you look after. If you don’t want to put in a lot of effort, then there have to be changes to get what you want — but it doesn’t take very long.
Are there any specific body positions that you know you should always do?
Danae: Yeah, belly dance, it’s all good. But belly dancers, I will tell you, have some more fun positions: back-bending, standing, knee-knee-knee, and toe-to-toe.
What are some exercises in Brazilian fado you personally do?
Danae: All kinds of exercises. Sometimes, I train some people to do knee rolls for their back. Sometimes, I’ll do one side of a table. And I also do these exercises where you start with your upper body, then you stretch out to your lower body. And then you turn and do the other side. It’s the main thing; that’s it.
How did your training with the ballet institute in Brasilia come about?
Danae: At that very first time I did ballet, that’s when I did Brazilian fado. And they taught me everything I know.
How did you become a teacher at the dance institute?
Danae: That was the beginning of my teaching. I’m not that good. I am good for Brazilian dance, but I’m not that good when it comes to teaching.
What kind of training do you do? Are there specific poses?
Danae: I do more stretching exercises. Like standing, or side bending. And then do the footwork — the walking and the dancing, do some of it, but also stretch out to your other side.
Did you ever feel like you were a beginner, you were just starting out?
Danae: Of course. I have to be a good dancer, to be taught things. There’s no other way about it. It’s not that I’m good enough, that I must do all this to know how to do it.
Did you ever feel like you were a little bit more advanced or more experienced than people around you, even at the beginning of your fado training?
Danae: Oh absolutely. You never feel like you’re not advanced. You never feel weak. It’s just
