The origins of belly dancing as a form of dance are still under suspicion, but it is believed to have originated in India (at least partially, or entirely) during the 14th century, but it was not until the 17th and 18th centuries that it became popular throughout Europe, and the dance was still a largely local affair in the mid-19th century. Despite its popularity in the world in the 19th century, a number of modern practitioners today maintain that there is no historical association between belly dancing and Indian. However, other sources believe the practice to have started in India and then spread to England, America and elsewhere. If you have an issue with this, you’re welcome to leave your opinion as to how history supports your version of events.
Who performs belly dancing?
Belly dancing can generally be divided into two groups: professional and amateur. Professional belly dancers generally perform for audiences, while amateur belly dancers perform for their families or friends. Professional performers earn money by teaching others how to perform certain moves; they typically spend much of their time practicing to stay in shape. Professional belly dancers tend to spend more time developing their physique and technique in order to be more physically capable of performing for larger audiences; they typically do not enjoy performing because they feel their performance is less than up to par. Amateur dancers enjoy performing for audiences because they enjoy the experience of performing and they gain personal satisfaction from hearing people enjoy the dance. Most of all, amateur belly dancers have an excellent chance of becoming the next “big name” in the industry because their performances are more likely to receive airtime than those of professionals.
How is belly dancing done?
Most belly dancers perform a series of moves to produce a series of body movements, sometimes over a period of several hours. The movements vary greatly in order to be expressive and artistic and it is important to be patient when learning what a dancer is able to do. However, you can practice a few techniques that will allow you to perform more freely and perform more complex dance moves that you would normally not be capable of performing.
A beginner’s routine is usually a series of steps that are performed with a partner. Your partner should learn to recognize your movements and work them by feeling the contours of your movements while you perform.
You can perform belly dancing with a partner on the front or back and you may also perform belly dance to a group (or to a group with several people, if there is a larger audience).
