I start off with a single set of 20s. I just hit the bar with a few sets of 30s on the back of the hand and then switch to one set of 20s on the front of the hand. Once you’re comfortable with it, you could start going through sets of 5-7 per week, as long as you stay within the 30s for the first set (or 10s for the second set, if you really like it) until you get to 80% of one set.
When do you really start to push your limits and see how far you can go with your sets?
Usually at the end of a workout (i.e., about 45 minutes into) I go about 8-10 sets back to back for three or four sets each time. I try my best to be very consistent and consistent with the sets with my arms, though I have to keep reminding myself that there will come a time when I need to drop some reps. Sometimes a great set can come in the middle a set, or even the last set of the workout.
What do you tell your fellow lifters for encouragement?
At my first meet I was actually nervous. I really didn’t believe it myself. I felt as if I was making it up as I went along, but I knew something was wrong. I told my coach, Andy, that I’d be in good shape and they assured me I wouldn’t be a total flop, that I’d be making progress. In fact, I did make it to the meet. I met a number of people who went out and had great sets of 20s. I’ll be honest there were a few people who had to lift some weights that day; I made it, but I was a little bit nervous that I didn’t meet my goal. I was nervous for a good reason in my first meeting; I felt like I didn’t have the proper set of bodyweight.
This week, I have two meet goals for January 2nd at the National High School Championships. The first is to be ranked in the top 25 for the total deadlift. The other goal is to be ranked in the top 15 in the deadlift category at the National Boys Senior Open. One day, I hope I can be as strong as I was this day in 2013; the other day, I hope I can show the world how far I can go. For myself, I’m just starting to think I can get there.
