A New England doctor has died after he was electrocuted while treating a patient who had suffered a heart attack.
Dr. Richard E. Smith, 61, of Plymouth, lost control of the electric motor in his chest and was fatally electrocuted after he touched a switch to turn on a fan.
“We have lost a man who was a truly great doctor and one of the brightest and best of his profession,” the Plymouth Union Leader reported in a Tuesday report, citing Massachusetts Emergency Medical Services.
The man, who was undergoing a heart attack and suspected of having a heart condition, was in a stable condition at West Shore Hospital on Tuesday, according to an update from the state Medical Examiner’s Office.
A Massachusetts state trooper and a group of emergency medical technicians were called to the hospital shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday.
