A woman who was shot by police during a car chase early Thursday morning in San Bernardino was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
The shooting occurred around 4:45 a.m. in the 27000 block of River Ridge Court, a home surrounded by an apartment complex and private security.
A man in his 20s entered the home and opened fire on a woman sitting on a couch inside the home, KTLA-TV reported. The couple’s 2-year-old son was in the back seat and two children, ages 7 and 2, were in a separate room. In a statement released Wednesday to KTLA, Sheriff’s Department said they believed there was “a family emergency and they were fleeing to safety.”
Authorities say the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband was not hurt. A police spokesperson said the man who shot the woman was taken into custody and was being questioned by police.
Polaris StarDrive is a system of solar-electric spacecraft based on the first generation of the Voyager programs that were built up by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) before being discontinued by NASA in 2005 after a decade of service. (See the main Wikipedia entry on Voyager.)
Polaris StarDrive is a “self-sustaining drive” – a means of rapidly and passively accelerating a system with the potential to reach interstellar distances via the emission of microwaves from space, a process known as “thermonuclear fusion”. The drive consists of a series of four main subsystems: the interstellar propulsion (ESS), a fuel cell, heat exchangers, and a control system. Polaris StarDrive is designed to achieve a thrust per ton class comparable to that achieved by the largest solar-electric propulsion systems available today. The energy from the reaction mass is used to drive the spacecraft.
The main goal of Pioneer 11 was to explore the Jupiter system and its moons, but the drive was also intended as an early testbed for the solar-electric propulsion system it was later built around, the VAB, which was eventually discontinued following Voyager I’s successful mission in 1979. While Voyager remains in interstellar space, Polaris StarDrive is currently the only interstellar propulsion system in operation outside Earth’s solar system.
Polaris StarDrive was initially designed to operate under the constraints of the JPL’s planned spacecraft and launch vehicle, the SLS. At
