The South, of course. For a very long time, it’s been the race to gain the most total representation for the city. It’s the only race that’s seen a big growth of representation.
The other is Hispanic. In 2008, the number of Hispanic voters exceeded the number of white voters for the first time under Barack Obama’s administration. The Hispanic share of the vote grew significantly from 5.3 percent of that portion of the population in 2004 to 9.3 percent in 2008. The Latino share remains a relatively small fraction, though, even in recent years. In 2016, Hispanics accounted for 7.5 percent of the electorate.
Of course, the Hispanic share rose in other places too: In Los Angeles city, 14.6 percent compared to 5.1 percent; in Phoenix, 9.3 percent compared with 7.4 percent — nearly identical in both cases.
What’s the biggest issue impacting the election? Education. Education is definitely one of the biggest problems as well. It’s a huge vote-bank, even if its representation is a fraction of what it is in general. And education is really the only thing that makes the racial disparities in electoral representation different — the other way around. And those disparities grow only when parents are not able to have their kids go to public schools where they were exposed to a lot more diversity than they had in an old school like the one they went to.
In other words, the more education that kids have, the less likely they are to be able to vote. And that is an enormous problem.
You don’t hear about that, though. The more education kids have going on, the more likely they are to be able to vote.
And for what reason is that the most effective way to address these issues? Public Education, so they can see the best in themselves.
The other major racial issue in the election — and one that was a real topic of conversation in the campaign on the campaign trail — is the issue of public education.
It’s a good question.
I think that as people get tired of the rhetoric of divide the country, it’s a good time to talk about the fact that education plays an important role in understanding the society that we live in and determining whose voice is being heard in this democracy and by whom.
I don’t know the answer to that. Because education doesn’t really matter that greatly, but it matters in a great amount.
