Let’s find out.
One problem I have with guitar instruction is that everyone will have a slightly different take on what’s best. I’m one of these guys who prefers teaching people to use guitar as a tool to express themselves through their playing. I actually love learning guitar, but I’m not as happy as some people are when they actually learn. I’ve seen that a lot with guitar lessons. The people who end up learning it the most are the ones who get the most enjoyment out of it. You don’t have to agree with them, but you do want them to get the most out of their lessons.
Here are the things to be careful about:
1. You’ll feel terrible and your voice will sound horrible, so your student will probably listen for another hour.
This might seem like the simplest problem in the world, but there are two aspects to it that people don’t consider. First, how do you know if your student is going to listen for another hour? Is your student going to get bored watching someone play a couple of hours and go back to their computer to learn some guitar? I see it all the time. There are several times when a student makes it clear they are not going to listen. Then when a student says that they are going to, they stop. Is that because they are bored? I don’t know, so I don’t listen to them.
I’ve seen it happen a lot. I was once teaching music for six hours a day. At one point, my student, in the middle of my music lesson, asked if he could just watch for another hour. I turned to him, and said that I’d probably need to start teaching him something else, so we could talk. As it turned out, it became a full-time job. I was happy about that. But how would I know if he had actually taken the time to look for another hour? I have no idea. I don’t even go to him anymore.
2. All the time in the world is a wasted hour.
The problem with that little bit, of course, is that the instructor spends a ton of time teaching this “other stuff.” It takes about two hours to play along to an R&B song! For that, I’ll give the instructor 300 points. But that’s two hours of my time. Now to use that time wisely, that is a huge time saver (and a lot of time you don’t use for other
