How to tune a guitar

“I’m a proud black woman,” Michelle Obama once said, and she’s not wrong, or even wrong to this day. Yet America continues to struggle to acknowledge its racism beyond the black community, and to move beyond it.

I was reminded of this recently when I saw a headline on a local ABC TV station: “In Obama years: More blacks attend high school, but few are graduates.”

The headline echoed what I’ve been thinking about for a while: America will be better off if most blacks go to college, rather than continue to work in the service industry, for example.

I say “better off” on several levels, including economic and social. I don’t think there’s much point in having a college degree unless you want to be in the workforce — and the way we’ve structured our public and private education systems does little to foster greater opportunity than the one we have now.

When it comes to job placement, though, a college degree is a vital tool. A 2011 survey from the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities found that nearly 60 percent of blacks and Hispanics with only a high school diploma had at least one job lined up by the time they graduated
