The world is not flat. There is a certain flatness here and there… but I think the number is not infinity.
When did you know you wanted to be a solo/vocalist?
At the age of 13 I was given something called an electric guitar by my dad. He had just picked one up at a garage sale, and it was just so beautiful. It was just so sweet and cool and so good-looking. I just wanted to play it all the time.
The only problem I had was how to play it. Every once in a while people suggested I should learn by ear but I didn’t want to! I’m sure I could play all the scales, but all I did at home was memorize the parts and it didn’t seem like they would ever work in the studio. Then, one day my dad said, “Go look into the stereo.” I was surprised because he had just given me one of these old sound stacks for Christmas, and I hadn’t even used it to get the guitar.
One thing that struck me as very unusual about the sound that the acoustic guitar has was that you could turn it up and down with the flick of a switch and you could still keep your tuning at any given time.
I used to play with these guys who went up to New York every summer and would just jam. They would always tell you they were the original Beatles.
There are many different kinds of chords. Do you understand these?
At first I was pretty dumb after the first hour or two, so I would just take it as simply as I could from the chords. This was about a year or two after I had gotten my first acoustic guitar. I just started playing chords and was able to play a ton, because my ears were still new.
You can do a lot with chords that you can’t do with just one. I would take all the single chords and I would make a big, huge, fat guitar out of them. Then I would go through them slowly like I was playing a big melody. Then, over the course of a couple weeks, the same thing would happen and I would make a bigger, big, fat guitar out of them.
There are a number of chords that are just common, but you play it so that you can see how they would work and play them on the guitar.
