How did gangsta rap start? – Rap Tutor

Why do we have to watch it, or like, what I was reading? Is it a trend or just a thing that’s popular in the media?

[Laughs.] It started out by the same dudes who were doing the “Molly Hatchet.” I was gonna go into a restaurant named after someone who died, but a bunch of my friends, even though they’re my friends, they wanted to go to it, and my friends, I was like, “Fuck it, I’m gonna go to the restaurant.” We were all just a bunch of boys and we were just sitting down and we didn’t understand why we were wearing that shit, but we all just kind of felt like it was a cool thing. Now, I think it’s kind of more important to get some respect from your peers, if you know what I mean. People like the guy named Kanye, and all these artists that make great music, they’re just the epitome of their generation. Now that I’ve been listening to it for a bit—and I listen to that stuff every day — I find it kind of cool that people are getting into the culture and it’s just a trend, so I don’t think anyone should ever make a statement about what it means. But at the same time, I’m happy to see what people are doing, and I love that people are starting to do that, you know?

I know most of my contemporaries are aware of it and are listening to it, but to be honest, I feel like it’s more than that. It’s a whole universe of music. I mean, it’s in the same world as, like, Future and Drake, it’s just different because we don’t feel so connected to the culture right now. So to see people like Kanye make music and be inspired by that, that just goes to show what kind of power rap has right now, if people like it. It’s almost like a game-changer, I guess. Because hip-hop, at the moment, it doesn’t matter what people are doing. I mean, everybody’s listening to the same shit. And then all this shit that’s happening, people starting to make music, you’re just watching it, and that’s cool, man.
