1) Make sure your throw is consistent throughout a long throw, and
2) Keep your arms in the same direction (and in line with the throws of your target) throughout the throw. It also helps to keep in mind that while you throw, your targets should be in the same (or an improved) range that they were two feet up in the air at the time of the throw. The closer your targets are to you at any given time, the more likely you are to throw at your target in the first place. The way you move while throwing helps get closer to them.
What about that distance? I still suck that far?
Sorry…I’m getting old in a hurry! But, remember, it helps you throw more accurately to develop and maintain the throwing speed necessary to make up for an increased size of the targets – and remember, the more accurate your throws (which, for those of you who are old enough in the sport’s lineage, means you can throw faster – remember that speed is an extension of accuracy), the more efficient you can be during your throws and thus hit your targets better with your throw. I think of these as being the key factors in improving your throwing. They are just as important in determining the success of your throws, however.
Now, that’s all good advice, but what about some practical questions?
Well, don’t do all the research on throwing distances and get all “determined” in advance. Find out how much distance you’ll be throwing from whatever target you intend to throw/target distance at and adjust accordingly. Be prepared when your throw goes past that distance to have some practice on it – I promise you, you won’t regret it.
Another point? It doesn’t matter how many goals you have for yourself. There is no such thing as an unachieved goal, and what you’re going to do when you don’t get what you want isn’t so different from the things you want (and the things you are going to do when you do get it). If there is a goal for that, make it a good one, and you’ll be in good shape for it. When we reach the goal, we do nothing else for the rest of our lives – so the next time there is a goal you can’t reach, make sure it’s a good one too.
Now, I’ve already talked about the subject of throwing accuracy before. Here’s another biggie to keep in mind – it
