Giratina (Japanese: カルテナ Shinryū) is an Enemy in the Generation II Pokémon games. Prior to Generation III, it was the Pokémon used by the Kanto Elite Four. Giratina is introduced as an Extra Pack in the third generation. In Generation II and the Advanced Generation series, the player can collect Giratina (Gen 3).
By defeating and rescuing Giratina, the player helps bring an end to the Kanto Elite Four’s threat to world peace and the Pokémon League itself. As part of this mission, the player helps the Pokémon League’s administration and its staff, as well as their Pokémon from Kanto as well as other worlds such as Sinnoh.
In the games
Giratina was first introduced in Pokémon Yellow, as part of the Legendary Pokémon Ash’s dream. She was later used in an encounter by the Elite Four, but was saved by a group of Trainers led by the player as he was the only one who could defeat her.
The player and the Elite Four then used the Pokémon that was on the run from the Kanto Elite Four to fight off the other Elite Four. While on the pursuit of Ash and the legendary Pokémon, the Pokémon went to another world, the HeartGold and SoulSilver version of Johto, where they met a trainer named Brock, named Viridian City Gym Leader, and a woman named Noland who wanted to find a Master Ball. After battling and receiving a Master Ball from Brock, the player and Viridian Gym Leader defeated the Kanto Elite Four but failed to stop their plans to capture Ash. The HeartGold and SoulSilver version of Johto, however, became part of the Kalos region.
