In my book, yes. But the question is, what are the characteristics of cello-playing? In my book, no. It’s basically the same as playing piano. In my book, no. What I’m saying is that in the past, we didn’t have access to all the different variables that the human eye sees. You can’t do cello-playing like other instruments, if you’re going to play a cello well — not at all. It’s like riding a bike with a steering wheel. You have to be prepared for anything, and just keep the wheel spinning and not get on the brakes. It’s kind of like that. When you sit down to play, you’re playing. You don’t want to get anywhere else unless you’re absolutely certain that you’re going to make it through the entire cycle. And if you get through that, then you know you’re playing. That is the beauty of playing piano: you can never really get anywhere else unless you have really done whatever it takes just to get through the cycles. Playing piano is very very similar to learning how to ride a bike, except you don’t have to go anywhere, you don’t have to pedal, you don’t have to know how to ride a bike. You just have to keep it going and that has to do with concentration.
“The thing about playing piano very much on the keyboard is that it’s a very very small piece, and it’s a very long piece. This is a large piece. This is a very expensive piece, and it takes a lot of preparation to play one piece like this, so I think it’s very important to have a lot of experience before you try to play it like this.
On his current work:
It’s been fun. I’m really glad I can do this kind of music. I have great memories of playing with The Replacements, the old-timey type of music and playing these big electric instruments and having these big huge spaces and the other musicians playing like their lives depended on it — it was great. It’s a lot to play — one of the things I’m always trying to do is to have a very nice environment on stage, because I don’t want my playing to feel like it’s a chore. It’s like, “Okay, go go go go — move up a little bit, put a little more energy.” When I’m doing this I don’t really want to distract in the least — that helps a lot. But
