OTTAWA – An inquiry into whether Canada’s government has been misled about the environmental impacts of its oilsands resource development will get more resources from its chief commissioner to ensure the inquiry meets the goals of the parliamentary budget watchdog’s study.
Michele Macklin, commissioner of the parliamentary budget office, said Wednesday that the office has ordered the Canada Revenue Agency to spend $2.7 million to help the inquiry meet its $3.2 million target.
The watchdog had requested resources for a probe into “the relationship between the activities that led to the federal environment minister being misled about the ecological concerns of the development of the oilsands and the public sector response to the environmental risks associated with them, notably to water and air quality.”
The inquiry is now expected to conclude by the end of the year.
Macklin, who also serves as a parliamentary deputy chair of the parliamentary budget office, said the inquiry and the office will now work toward achieving an agreement
