“It’s a long story. When I was younger, I didn’t realise I had this disability,” he said.
He had been a member of the pole dancing club in his younger years and had been competing in competitions.
He continued: “There were a lot of people doing really good routines, but when I started competing, I started getting complaints because people would do their routines well and then suddenly, there was a problem.
“You realise you’re not in control any more. It can be a big problem.”
He also says that when he did compete with the Australian Olympic team, he was a member of an under-23 team. The team would have been in the competition, but he never got the opportunity.
Mr Rolfe says being overweight isn’t the only problem with pole Dancing, “It’s just such a different concept.”
“The thing that bothers me most is that no one even listens to what I say because a lot of people go up to me and have said I’m crazy and it’s just so sad.”
He says he does have support from family members, but that sometimes it is difficult for him to explain pole dancing to them.
“You don’t know what they’re going to think when you tell them you danced on the pole,” he said.
“They say ‘oh you’re a bit weird.’
“There’s always going to be negative stuff about things you’ve done, but I like it and I’ve got friends who do this.”
He says despite that, he does worry about people thinking pole dancing is a gimmick.
“Some people are going to think that’s the way to do it. I have to deal with that. I mean, it was a joke, you know?”
