Why can I have the tattoo in the State of Michigan?
A tribal tattoo is considered a public record by the Michigan Public Records Act. Michigan law requires that all state officials, officials at the State Archives Office and employees at the Secretary of State’s office, and the employees of the Michigan Board of Canvassers have a copy of a tribal tattoo. If you have the tattoo, the Secretary of State’s office will forward it to the Michigan Board of Canvassers for use. If you have a tribal tattoo that was a legal, approved tattoo for 18 years or older and you had a civil marriage that was made prior to August 1, 2010, you may apply for a civil marriage license to the Secretary of State’s office at that time.
Can I wear a tribal tattoo on my clothing?
Yes. Tribal tattoos can be worn as long as they are not visible or have been removed. If you have a tribe tattoo or are having a tribal tattoo removed, you may apply for a license of removing it to the Secretary of State’s office. A tribal tattoo has not been approved for the female breast. We recommend that you contact the tribal council for legal advice and guidance in any such situation.
