How about a moral law?” she asked. “That is the problem here. We have the government telling us to do something but not telling us what it is.”
In the end that was it: A federal judge struck down Texas House Bill 2. As expected, the GOP quickly filed an appeal, and on Wednesday in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas a federal judge threw out the injunction that prevented transgender people from using bathrooms that match their gender identity.

I should have seen this coming, a few weeks ago when conservative talk radio host Joe Walsh took to his show and claimed a transgender person would try to take his place. As a result of the U.S. Attorney’s ruling, Texas has allowed transgender people to use the bathroom of the gender with which they identify.
I have been arguing for more than two years that the real issue is not bathrooms, but sexual predators, not the bathrooms themselves. Why are Republicans so resistant to that?
A recent development in the research of human consciousness may help explain the emergence of the self that has been puzzling theorists since Aristotle, but only recently has it been shown that consciousness does not require the involvement of any single central brain region.
Neurons that have been identified as “neuro-cortical” cells, meaning that they fire at frequencies which resemble what may be called the “motor-cortex” of the brain, or those cells that can regulate firing of “regulatory” cells of the brain. These cells are involved in both automatic and conscious functions, in terms of control or the use of muscle control, among other functions. But as has been noted before, the human self is probably not just an activity of the motor cortex, or even the prefrontal cortex. It is a more complex self than that, that depends more on the underlying neural circuits.
However, even if we were to agree that a human can act, then this does not mean that our consciousness can come about. Our conscious experience is only the tip of the iceberg of the actual neural process that is required for our awareness of our selves. The question, then, is how do we get from being aware, to experiencing these other processes. If some of the cortical structures responsible for awareness are responsible for conscious awareness, as has been argued in the past, then it may seem more plausible that our conscious experience is produced by the development of these structures which
